MYRA CLARK

My work is born within the eco-system of my body. My eyes, stomach, hands, and heart, especially, play together we respond to the urge to make something. My hands become my eyes, my stomach hungers for fulsome, weighty, choices of shape, color and materials, and all parts lean together to fulfill the yearning to create. I cultivate the skills and practice to make whatever comes to me, which is of key creative importance for my work. Most often, this is centered in drawing, abstract painting, installations focused on social justice issues, and iconography.
Materials are a key consideration and are often transformed in non-traditional ways. Polystyrene foam and plastic become Antarctic landscapes; interlining fabric used in garment construction modifies tone and saturation in an abstract painting; and mark making with Bounty paper towels, gold leaf, ink, or acrylic paint adds texture and emotional depth to the work. Whether making huge, frenetic drawings in charcoal, slowly executing a Byzantine icon
in egg tempera, cutting into foam with a hot wire cutter, or vigorously pounding staples into a wood panel, materials guide the images and ideas that emerge.
Seeking and finding images equally mirrors the seeking and finding of interiority and longing in my life and work. This focus and faith in my process lends itself to dynamic, intuitive art, engaging all of who I am and what I make.
