Drawing is something I’ve done for as long as I can remember. My report cards from kindergarten and first grade begin mentioning my enthusiasm for art, which those teachers wanted to encourage. However, that soon changed, and the teachers were suggesting that I needed to spend more time on my reading and arithmetic and less time drawing—which was true. In high school, I opted for art classes instead of study halls. By my senior year I was able to fit two art classes into every day. That and the fact that I had a remarkable teacher led to an art school scholarship after graduation.

I went on to study art in college and then to teach at the college level, and always among the subjects I taught were various drawing courses. I would tell my students that drawing provides the foundation for all of the visual arts.

The drawings in this exhibit were created with an expressive humanist intent. They were conceived in the absence of a model, with the exception of an articulated skeleton, which I relied on for many of The Plague Drawings.

Art can serve a number of functions. One of the most expected and appreciated is to offer a pleasing aesthetic experience. This is a noble purpose, one I’ve pursued in my work at times. But much of my work speaks to another function of art: to reflect the society and times in which we live—to express concerns about the human condition, capturing in visual expression the heart of a social or political issue or historic event. This show includes drawings created in response to the AIDS pandemic, the degradation of the environment, and the plight of the homeless on our streets.
