KANETAKA IKEDA

For years I have been creating artwork on the theme of Cosmic Tree. The inspiration behind this theme is from a vivid, memorable dreams I had back in the late 1980's and early 1990's. Among them there was one dream that was most memorable and most influential. In this dream I was in the center of the universe surrounded by zillions of whirling orbs which I thought were suns and stars. With an immense energy which I felt, they moved toward the center where nebulous, ever-changing tree like form stood. Afterward, after spending many thoughts on this dream, I came to see the universe in a rather romantic, symbolic way as Cosmic Tree in which among other things, suns and stars are the fruits and flowers, and invisible lines of gravity, its branches.

Because I do not see the necessity to recapture the dream of the Cosmic Tree, in works that deals with this theme, I do not attempt to visualize my dream realistically, but create original forms and visual compositions inspired from it. Besides sculpture, the inspiration has manifested in a variety of art media- installations, paintings, drawings and even an illustrated story in a verse form. With sculpture, I have been depicting the Cosmic Tree symbolically as an organic, plant-like form colored with spiraling patterns resembling stars and galaxies. Though in a dream, the Cosmic Tree is ever changing, boundless form, which I believe the universe is; as a concrete sculptural form, I have tried to capture it as though the time stopped, and for a nanosecond the form instantaneously solidify. Resulting forms appear to me resemble a mysterious plant-like organic form- a Christmas tree gone tropical, surreal or cacti. Because Cosmic Tree is ever changing, each one I make is unique.

Probably not apparent (yet), but with these Cosmic Trees, I am making a personal, miniature 'shrine' celebrating the unity of all things and individuality of each.
