GIA WHITLOCK

Domestic interiors are containers that hold the past, the present and the future all at once. Nostalgic objects access fleeting and changing memories from long ago in a room decorated with hopes and fears about the future. Sometimes, fresh food rests on the table in an uninhabited kitchen, while plants flourish in their containers, and funky lamps illuminate whimsical and strange objects around the room. A bathroom mirror will “reflect” a completely unexpected room. Some picture frames hold abstract images while others contain fragments of the mysterious and unknown within their tiny voids. The absence of the figure invites the viewer to be held in a space of reflection, celebration and contemplation. Curiosities like “who will eat all these eggs?” and “how long have they been sitting on the table? transform into deeper questions, like, “what can we learn from the past? What can we do in the present?” and “how can we use this awareness to positively affect the future?” Skewed perspectives and strange details transport these spaces from catalog-like representation into the surreal. Things are a little weird here, but the uncanny grounds these images in the constants of imperfection and change.
