I’m a believer that psychology is destiny. On a quest to understand myself and those around me, I view my art practice as a laboratory for this work. It’s not easy to access the unconscious corners of one’s psyche, yet art making is a window into that world. It is also a form of meditation, where one can observe and confront the fears, tics and positive qualities that influence the process of creating.

My paintings represent my experience of reality and of the sometimes confounding unreality of being human. Beauty and darkness, conflict and resolution, emotion and reason. My goal is to project the complexity of lived experience in compositions that engage the eye and the mind.

The current drivers of my image-making are color and composition. From these basic, formal building blocks, I create mixed media paintings that plumb my internal world and encourage viewers to find feelings, associations and meanings by experiencing the relationship of forms and colors, and the messages encoded in gesture, texture and other subtle, sometimes unconscious, clues. In other words, I create works of Narrative Abstraction.

My studio practice includes a dialog with past artistic movements — The Nabis, especially Bonnard, The Fauves, Vlaminck and Matisse, in particular, and Diebenkorn, a modernist and lyrical abstractionist, are primary influences. Colorists of all stripes inspire me.

I’m committed to improvisation and intuition as guides to image-making, as they lead to novel outcomes. My undergraduate studies in philosophy and my experience as a journalist honed my critical thinking and editing skills.
These ‘hard’ skills interplay with the responsiveness and looseness I cultivate in dance classes. It all shows up in the studio.
