CHRISTA NYE

While I am primarily a painter, I have recently been working three-dimensionally and see my new sculptures as an extension of my paintings. Similar to my paintings, I utilize color as a personal approach for expressing my varying emotional states and perceptions of the world around me. Each piece narrates a story through the useof colorsassociated with particular emotions.
The colorful and vibrant wooden sculptures and wall reliefs explore the tension created by combining salvaged wood with acrylic paint. Materials that might otherwise be discarded serve as the foundation for each composition. Starting with a base shape, additional elements are added, layer by layer, to form patterns dictated by the properties and randomly cut shapes of the wood. As individual pieces are combined and painted, the recognizable characteristics of the wood are preserved. The complexity of each work is developed in an improvisational and intuitive way, drawing on years of experience. The resulting sculptures are whimsical yet elegant compositions that tell stories of past lives and future possibilities.
