Gia Whitlock

Art is the language I use to translate the stories of my past that I can’t tell with any other method. As a result of intense spiritual abuse in my youth, I have suffered from many mental illnesses over the past three decades. Nonetheless, I have made a life for myself while navigating depression, emotional regulation disorder (formerly borderline personality disorder) and complex post-traumatic stress disorder (C-PTSD). While my work is based in mental anguish, faulty belief systems and trauma, themes of healing and release emerge in it as well.

Found object sculptures and moveable wall hangings represent memories, thoughts, and feelings that came back to me in pieces over the past twenty years. Many of these “pieces” have come to me through confronting facts and my feelings about the past, examining triggering moments, and most important, exploring and reflecting on my vivid dreams.

What begins as the story of (mostly) silent suffering, becomes the story of reclaiming myself. Illness transforms from burden to inspiration. Reliving the past is replaced with acknowledgment, healing and hope for the future.
