Philip Stork
Growing up around New York City, I have been immersed in art from an early age. The city introduced me to abstract expressionism as well as providing me access to great museums and galleries, as well as the Art Students League of New York for life drawing. I developed my artistic style as a cartoonist and animator and an emphasis on the drawn line has dominated my early artistic career, focusing on real and imagined landscapes and cityscapes, carried out in pen and colored pencil.
Over the past two years, my art has emphasized abstract landscapes and color fields, captured in pastel, combined with colored pencil and ink. Pastels afford me the ability to create subtle color fields without the constraints of rendering identifiable figures and shapes. The addition of linear elements to the image provides a scaffold and a counterpoint for these elements. While these works have been a departure from my previous works, they reflect my need to continuously challenge myself as an artist.
