Ellen Goldschmidt - Hot Lava: Family Pictures | Palmarin Merges and guest Mary Agnes Krell - Some Assembly: A Remediated Exquisite Corpse

2017

What if childhood is the reality and adulthood the fairytale? That is a question Ellen Goldschmidt examines in her latest psychologically acute paintings that explore her formative years.

Revisiting 3 x 3” black and white family snapshots from the late 50s and early 60s, Goldschmidt teases out emotional truths petrified on the surface, inventing color palettes, altering the figures’ environments and collaging photo references together to create her images.

For their two-person show, printmaker and Blackfish artist Palmarin Merges teamed with Brighton, England-based digital media artist Mary Agnes Krell to produce a new form of exquisite corpse, a cross-continental exchange of prints, collages, photographs, digital imagery, prose and poetry, mediated through computer manipulation and Skype.
